KiteFest
KiteFest is an annual two day music festival held primarily for children and young people with disabilities. Research shows that young people with disabilities have a very poor quality of life experiences when compared to the typical population. For many young people with a disability such as autism, a mainstream festival would present them with so many challenges that they would be unable to go, this is not the case at KiteFest.
The festival includes a strong element of live professional performance for people to enjoy and for many to experience the joy of seeing a live band for the very first time and dancing in front of the stage.
KiteFest also gives students with disabilities an opportunity to perform and their performance at whatever level is celebrated. Over the two days there are many inspirational performances from individuals and groups. In fact, the joy of the “KiteFesters” experience is infectious and this in turn inspires others to take the risk, conquer their fears and anxieties to perform and take their turn on the stage.
The festival is also open to students from main stream schools and aims to break down barriers and to improve understanding between people with disabilities and those without.
Over the two days, workshops are held, for all the KiteFesters to learn new skills such as Street Dance, Drumming and Circus Skills.
Entrance to the festival is free and is funded solely by donations to 'Building Futures Together'.
